The Shetland Sailing Mysteries are puzzle-style crime novels starring indomitable solo-sailor Cass Lynch and Inverness DI Gavin Macrae. The books don’t have to be read in order – each mystery is self-sufficient, and there are no spoilers in subsequent books.  However there’s a slow-growing love story over the books, and a number of series characters. The books were partly written as a response to the FAQ from people on the mainland: ‘But what do you find to do up there?’ Each book is set in a particular part of Shetland, at a particular time of year, and showcases not only the gorgeous scenery but also local events at that time.

What People Are Saying About the Series

“A beautifully written murder mystery… The author has the ability to paint wonderful pictures on the printed page and I was instantly transported to this amazing land and seascape, visualising the location with ease and total pleasure. I loved all the characters and their specific dialects and accents were handled with skill and subtlety that made it a joy to read. This is one book that I never wanted to leave and was sad when it came to an end.”

— Perkins, Amazon

“As a detective novel, Death on a Longship is a solid, well-plotted book, with likeable characters. However, what really elevates it above the average murder mystery is the setting. The book takes place almost entirely in Shetland, and the author beautifully evokes the landscape, the people and the language. ... the descriptions of these complex islands are fascinating. The book is as much about Cassandre's uneasy relationship with Shetland as it is about solving a murder - and so the islands' history, culture, dialect, wild beauty, and considerable natural resources, all form part of the story.

I very much enjoyed the book, and would certainly recommend it. The one warning is that, by the end, you may suffer from a burning desire to acquire a boat and sail to Shetland yourself...”

— L Roberts, Amazon

“I enjoyed this book enormously... the mystery itself held me enthralled. The suspects are numerous, and kept me guessing. When the murderer is revealed it was satisfying to see that the clues were all there for the amateur sleuth, provided you are a student of human nature. ... Highly recommended.”
